Vietnam U17 to face strong opponents to vie for World Cup spot

VOV.VN - Vietnam will take on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) featuring naturalised players at the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026, a key qualifier for the FIFA U17 World Cup.

The Vietnamese side have been drawn into a challenging group, where they will face opponents from the Republic of Korea (RoK), and Yemen, alongside the UAE.

Among Vietnam’s opponents, the RoK are considered the strongest contender, while the UAE are also seen as a formidable side thanks to their extensive preparations and year-round training programmes.

Notably, the UAE include two naturalised players: goalkeeper Josh Bentley and forward Jayden Adetiba. Although neither has UAE heritage, both qualify to represent the team after being born and raised in the country.

Jayden Adetiba, born in 2009, joined Arsenal's youth academy at the age of 9 and has been part of the club’s youth setup. Last year, he played a decisive role in helping the UAE draw 1-1 with Vietnam at the 2025 AFC U17 Asian Cup, assisting the equaliser that secured UAE a place at the World Cup.

Josh Bentley who is nearly 1.90 meters tall is a goalkeeper for Ipswich U18 in the English Football League. During a recent training camp, he played the full two matches for the UAE U17 team.

Vietnam are scheduled to play Yemen on May 7, the RoK on May 10 and the UAE on May 14.

The tournament, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from May 5 to 22, will feature 16 teams divided into four groups and serve as a qualification pathway for the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026.

Under FIFA allocation, Asia has nine slots for the tournament, including hosts Qatar. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals and secure World Cup qualification. If Qatar progress from the group stage, an additional slot will be awarded to the best third-placed team.
