Vietnam to play underdogs at women’s Asian qualifiers for 2024 Olympics

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese women’s football team will play Nepal, Palestine and Afghanistan in Group C of Asian qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The result of the draw was announced by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) at its headquarters in Malaysia on January 12.

Vietnam are currently placed at 34th position in FIFA’s latest rankings, while the three other teams in Group C were ranked beyond 100th mark.

The 2024 AFC Women's Olympic qualifying round is to determine which women's national teams from Asia qualify for the upcoming Olympics.

The top two teams in the qualifying stage will represent Asia at the 2024 Olympics in France.

In the first qualifying round, the five highest-ranked teams in the FIFA Women’s world rankings as of December 9, 2022, namely the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia, China, and the Republic of Korea, have all received wild cards into the second round.

The remaining 26 teams have been divided into five groups of four and two groups of three to compete in a one-round format at a centralised venue. The winners of each group in this round will then advance to the second round.

Vietnam will play Nepal, Palestine, and Afghanistan from April 3 to April 11.

The second and third rounds will duly be held in October and November this year.

Two years ago in Asian qualifiers, Vietnam reached the final round and only lost to Australia who went on to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
