Vietnam targets strong showing at Asian Para Games
VOV.VN - With 21 athletes competing in five key sports, the Vietnamese delegation of athletes with disabilities aims for a strong performance at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Japan.
The delegation will depart for Japan on the evening of October 10, entering the final preparation stage for the Games, which run from October 18 to 24 in Aichi-Nagoya.
An anticipated highlight of the opening ceremony is powerlifter Le Van Cong, who is expected to bear the flag. The assignment serves as a fitting tribute to one of the nation's most accomplished Para athletes.
Vietnam participates with 36 members, including 21 athletes competing in five sports: track and field, swimming, powerlifting, table tennis, and badminton. Upon arrival, they will undergo classification, attend technical meetings, and acclimate to competition venues.
The squad size of 21 reflects a deliberate strategy: allocating resources strictly to events with realistic medal potential. Against Asian powerhouses such as China, Japan, the Republic of Korea (RoK), and Iran, targeting silver and bronze medals aligns realistically with the delegation's capacity.
Powerlifting stands as the primary medal prospect, spearheaded by Le Van Cong. Meanwhile, the swimming team, with seven athletes entered across multiple events, also holds strong podium opportunities.
The 2026 Games are not merely a medal race, but also a test of squad depth and generational transition for Vietnamese paralympic sports.
In Aichi-Nagoya, Le Van Cong carrying the flag will embody the resilience that the Vietnamese delegation brings to the event.
