Vietnam targets 40–50 golds at 13th ASEAN Para Games

VOV.VN - Vietnam will send 141 para athletes to compete in 11 sports at the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand from January 15 to 26, aiming to secure 40–50 gold medals and finish in the top four overall, the Vietnam Paralympic Committee announced in Hanoi on December 9.

The Vietnamese delegation will total 185 members, including athletes, guides, coaches, officials and support staff. They will compete in athletics, swimming, powerlifting, badminton, table tennis, chess, judo, boccia, archery, tennis and fencing.

A send-off ceremony is scheduled for December 16 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Powerlifter Le Van Cong who won two gold medals at the 12th ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia in 2023 and two gold medals at the World Para Powerlifting Organisation's Pattaya World Cup 2024 in Thailand is among Vietnamese hopefuls in the regional games.

Other outstanding faces are swimmer Le Tien Dat who bagged four golds, one silver and three records at the ASEAN Para Games from 2013 to 2023, and javelin thrower Cao Ngoc Hung who represented Vietnam at the Asian Para Games 2023.

Vietnamese officials said the regional sporting event will serve as an important stepping stone toward the 2026 Asian Para Games in Japan and the 2028 Paralympics in the United States.
