Vietnam excels at world young rapid & blitz chess championship

VOV.VN - Young Vietnamese chess players grabbed three gold, six silver, and six bronze medals at the FIDE World Cadet & Youth Rapid & Blitz Championship 2025, which concluded in Rhodes, Greece, on April 17.

Accordingly, in the U14 blitz category, Dau Khuong Duy, earned nine points after 11 matches, including seven wins and four draws, to claim the championship.

Meanwhile, in the rapid category, Nguyen Nam Kiet won over Khuong Duy to earn a gold medal with nine points. Duy also finished on nine points, but had a worse tie-breaking criteria.

The remaining gold medal went to Tran Hoang Bao An who won the girls' U10 blitz category.

The Vietnamese team also earned silver and bronze medals in other categories. The tournament, organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), drew the participation of 430 competitors from 48 countries and territories worldwide. 

They competed in the rapid and blitz chess matches in six age groups for boys and girls under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 years old.

Vietnam sent 40 masters to the tournament which follows the 11 round Swiss system.
