The usual regulations of the King’s Cup stipulate that the two highest ranked teams will face off against the two lowest ranked teams in the semifinals of the King’s Cup.
However, these rules were changed a few days ago with the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) wanting to decide future fixtures through a draw.
With this new format, all teams are eligible to face each other in the tournament’s opening round, regardless of their FIFA ranking.
As a result, the opening match will see Curacao, ranked 82nd by FIFA, take on India, ranked 101st by FIFA at 15:30 on June 5. Late that same day Vietnam, ranked 89th by FIFA, will play the host nation Thailand, ranked 114th by FIFA, at 19:45.
The Vietnamese team along with their Korean coach Park Hang Seo are scheduled to gather in Hanoi before flying to Thailand to attend the tournament, which is due to take place between June 5 and June 8.
At the same time, Vietnam’s U23s will also gather in Hanoi to play a friendly match against Myanmar on June 7.
