Vietnam defend Asian pencak silat title

Vietnam successfully defended its top position at the third Asian Pencak Silat Championship that ended in the Republic of Korea on September 26.

Pencak Silat is an umbrella term for a class of Indonesian martial arts.

Vietnam pocketed 13 medals, eight golds, four silvers and one bronze, at the six-day tournament.

Among the gold medal winners were Pham Thi Tuoi in the women’s 50kg category, Tran Thi Them in women’s 55kg, Nguyen Thai Linh in men’s 60kg and Tran Dinh Nam in men’s 75kg. All the eight gold medals were in “tanding” (combat) categories.

Indonesia was second with four gold medals, followed by Philippines with two.

In the second championship held last year in Singapore, Vietnamese athletes won 10 gold medals.
