Vietnam chess team holds out for draw at Olympiad’s eighth round

VOV.VN -Vietnamese chess players on October 2 held out for a draw at the eight round of the on going 2018 Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia.

The Vietnamese female team (19th place) drew with Cuba (22nd place) with the score of 2-2.

Vo Thi Kim Phung (Elo 2368) had a slightly disappointing day as she was defeated by Lisandra Teresa (Elo 2415) while Pham Le Thao Nguyen (Elo 2347) shone during the round as she beat Lopez Yaniet (Elo 2281).

Meanwhile, Hoang Thi Bao Tram and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung drew with their Cuban rivals.

As a result, the female team temporarily stands at a moderate 17th position after 8 rounds. They will next face the host, Georgia, who ranks 56th.

The male chess team, including Le Quang Liem, Truong Son, Tran Tuan Minh, and Nguyen Anh Khoi, also drew 2-2 with lower-ranked Kazakhstan team.

Grandmaster Quang Liem (Elo 2715) and Nguyen Anh Khoi (Elo 2463) also held out for a draw with Jumabayev Rinat (Elo 2605) and Makhnev Denis (Elo 2449), respectively.

Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Elo 2620) however came out victorious over Ismagambetov Anuar (Elo 2538) while Tuan Minh (Elo 2491) was defeated by Kazhgaleyev Murtas (Elo 2582).

The team is now ranking 18th place and will meet Switzerland (39th place) in the ninth round.
