Vietnam aim for strong start against Timor-Leste at ASEAN U-19 Boys' Championship
VOV.VN - Vietnam U19 will open their ASEAN U-19 Boys' Championship 2026 campaign against Timor-Leste U19 in Group A on June 1, with kick-off scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Sumatera Utara Main Stadium in Indonesia.
Vietnam entered the tournament after assembling in late April and completing a 10-day training camp in Japan. A series of friendly matches against youth teams there provided valuable experience and helped the squad improve both technically and mentally.
Preparations, however, were disrupted by the absence of several key players due to injuries and club commitments. Nevertheless, head coach Ikeuchi believes the players available are capable of achieving the team's objectives.
Timor-Leste U19, meanwhile, are no longer regarded as an easy opponent. The team has made noticeable progress in recent years, combining an energetic playing style with strong determination and improved tactical organisation.
Vietnam U19 hold a commanding record in recent meetings, having won their last four encounters against Timor-Leste by comfortable margins. At youth level, however, past results offer only limited guidance, as squads change rapidly and surprises are always possible.
Youth football in Southeast Asia has become increasingly competitive in recent years, with the gap in standards continuing to narrow. Any lapse in concentration could prove costly against a Timor-Leste side that has continued to develop in recent years.
Under the tournament format, only the group winners and the best second-placed team advance, making goal difference a potentially decisive factor. Vietnam U19 will therefore be targeting not only a victory but also a convincing result to strengthen their position in the race for qualification.
Despite their personnel issues, Vietnam U19 are still considered favourites thanks to the overall quality of their squad and greater competitive experience. If they perform to their potential and maintain their focus, Ikeuchi’s side will be well placed to begin the tournament with three points and a positive result.
