VFF President invited to be head of football delegation at ASIAD 19

VOV.VN - The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has invited Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) President Tran Quoc Tuan to serve as head of the men’s and women’s football’s delegation for the upcoming 19th Asian Games (ASIAD 19).

In line with this change, during a recent meeting with the VFF, Winston Lee, general secretary of the AFF, shared that they highly appreciate the role and contribution of Tuan.

“AFF believes that with the participation of Vietnam Football Federation President Tran Quoc Tuan, Southeast Asian football will reach Asia and the world. Vietnamese football and Southeast Asian football will work together for common development,” the AFF General Secretary emphasised. Moving forward, the Tuan will manage his new role at ASIAD 19 on September 16.

Tuan is currently chairman of the AFC Competition Committee for the 2023 2027 term, commissioner of the AFC Asian Cup Organizing Committee for the 2023 to 2027 term, chairman of the AFF Competition Committee for the 2022 to 2026 term, and a member of the AFF Finance Committee.

The Asian Games 2023 is scheduled to take place on September 19, with the football event at the competition also beginning on the same date. The function will see 23 teams participating in the men’s football and 17 countries fighting for the medal in the women’s football.

The men’s football tournament at the ASIAD will be a U23 affair, with a maximum of three senior players allowed in each squad.

Vietnam are set to take on regional power Saudi Arabia, a strong Iran side, along with Mongolia in Group B. The top two teams from six groups and the four best third-placed teams across all groups will therefore progress to the round of 16. On the women's side, Vietnam are in Group D with Japan, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

The nation’s toughest rival will be the reigning champion Japan, while the rest of the teams are lower-level rankings.

The top teams from the five groups and the three best second-placed teams across the groups will make up quarter-finalists in the women’s tournament.
