Two Vietnamese players carry medal hopes at IPCA World Championship

VOV.VN -Two Vietnamese chess players are heading to Spain for the 25th International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) World Chess Championship, carrying hopes of extending the country’s recent success on the international stage.

The tournament is scheduled take place in Guardamar del Segura from June 1 to 13, bringing together more than 70 players from 18 countries. Representing Vietnam are two experienced female players Tran Thi Bich Thuy and Doan Thu Huyen who both won medals at the previous edition.

The pair were instrumental in Vietnam’s impressive performance at the 24th IPCA World Championship held in Goboa, India, in 2025. Bich Thuy claimed one gold, one silver and one bronze medal, while Thu Huyen added another bronze, helping Vietnam make a strong impact despite its small delegation.

According to head coach Bui Quang Vu, the team’s goal this year is to continue competing for medals while allowing the athletes to gain further experience at the international competition.

Those expectations are backed by Vietnam’s recent achievements in regional competition. Earlier this year at the 13th ASEAN Para Games, Vietnamese chess players delivered an outstanding performance with 15 gold medals, four silvers and 11 bronzes.

The achievement helped Vietnam top the overall standings in para chess for the first time and made the sport the country’s biggest gold-medal contributor at the regional games.

Players such as Tran Thi Bich Thuy and Doan Thu Huyen are not only symbols of sporting excellence but also examples of resilience and the desire to overcome personal limitations in pursuit of their passion.

From regional success to world-level achievements, Vietnam’s para chess movement has steadily strengthened its position on the international sporting map. And in Spain this year, despite having only two representatives, the team still carry the ambition of bringing home more medals and continuing to inspire through sport.
