Thuy Linh gains first win at 2022 BWF World Championships

VOV.VN - Vietnamese player Nguyen Thuy Linh successfully overcame Japanese rival Ohori Aya in the first round of the 2022 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships which were held on August 22 in Japan.

In the women’s singles event, world No. 60 Linh took on world No. 27 Ohori Aya, marking the first time that they had faced each other in a global tournament.

The host athlete was able to defeat the Vietnamese player 21-12 in the first set, although Linh quickly equalised to make the score 21-19 in the second set.

The Phu Tho native went on to gain victory over Japanese player 21-11 in the third set, with the match ultimately ending 2-1 in favour of the Vietnamese representative.

Moving forward, Linh will face world’s No. 3 An Se Young of the Republic of Korea on August 23 in the next round of the tournament.

The 2022 BWF World Championships initially began on August 22 and is scheduled to last through to August 28, with games taking place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan.

Apart from Thuy Linh, the other Vietnamese representatives Nguyen Tien Minh and Nguyen Thi Trang are competing in the men’s and women’s singles.
