The top ten domestic sports events of 2017

VOV.VN - 2017 has marked some important milestones in the history of Vietnamese sports with great successes for Vietnamese athletes at regional tournaments such as SEA Games 29, AIMAG 5, and ASEAN Paragames 2017. Following are the top ten sporting events as selected by VOV:

The Vietnamese sports team ranks 3rd in the medal tally at SEA Games 29 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with 169 medals (59 gold medals). The team fulfilled the set targets and made thorough preparations for the upcoming Asian Games 2018 and the 2020 Olympics.

Vietnamese athletes competed successfully at the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2017 (AIMAG5) held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan coming home with 40 medals (13 gold medals), and ranking 9th in the medal tally.

The Vietnamese sports team surpassed Thailand to rank first in the Southeast Asian region in the track and field event with 17 gold medals at SEA Games 29.

Vietnamese athletes with disabilities ranked fourth in the medal tally for the second consecutive time at the ASEAN Paragames 2017 winning 162 medals including 40 gold medals.

Top Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien bagged 8 gold medals at SEA Games 29 for the second time. She also secured two gold medals at AIMAG 5.

Grandmaster Le Quang Liem won three out of the 13 gold medals for Vietnam at the team rapid and blitz chess and standard chess events at AIMAG 5.

The Vietnamese team made history with a gold medal, defeating their Singaporean rivals in the men’s table tennis team at SEA Games 29. This is the first SEA Games gold medal in the history of Vietnam’s table tennis.

Quang Nam Club won the V.League 2017 title for the first time with a haul of 48 points. Striker Nguyen Anh Duc became the best domestic player in the V.League with 17 goals for Becamex Binh Duong Club

Six national football teams have secured their places in the final rounds of regional tournaments including Futsal Vietnam, the Women’s team, U16, U19 and U23, and the national team. Most notably, Vietnam’s U20 football team earned a place to participate in the FIFA U20 World Cup in the Republic of Korea for the first time.
