Scoreless draw with Thailand sends Vietnamese women's team to ASIAD quarterfinals

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese women's national team secured a 0-0 draw against Thailand in their final Group E match at the Nagai Stadium in Osaka, Japan on September 21, officially advancing to the quarterfinals of ASIAD 2026 as one of the two best third-placed teams.

This result successfully carried coach Hoang Van Phuc's side through to the next stage of the continental tournament.

Prior to the match, both Vietnam and Thailand had yet to secure a point after two matches. However, Vietnam held the advantage in goal difference and only needed a draw to maintain their chances of progressing, while Thailand was forced to win.

Both teams approached the match cautiously, prioritizing safety. Vietnam proactively dropped their formation back to wait for counter-attacking opportunities, while Thailand controlled more of the ball but struggled against a tightly organized defense.

During the first half, Vietnam created several notable chances. In the 25th minute, Van Su dribbled at high speed past the penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot that failed to beat the Thai goalkeeper. In the 42nd minute, Duong Thi Van fired a long-range shot from outside the penalty area, sending the ball wide of the goal.

Thailand also created dangerous situations but failed to capitalize. Both teams entered halftime at 0-0.

In the second half, Thailand pushed their formation higher in search of a goal. The Golden Temple team continuously applied pressure, while goalkeeper Kim Thanh and the Vietnamese defenders played with strict focus.

In the 76th minute, Pengngam Saowalak penetrated the penalty area and bypassed Kim Thanh, but the Vietnamese defense cleared the ball just before the goal line.

Four minutes later, Thailand had another opportunity, but good coordination between Kim Thanh and Diem My defused the dangerous situation.

At the other end, Vietnam also created a chance in the 82nd minute as Vu Thi Hoa received the ball inside the penalty area, ultimately failing to unleash a shot.

The closing minutes grew tense without either team breaking the deadlock. Overall, Vietnam drew 0-0 with Thailand, helping the Vietnamese women's team accomplish their target and secure a quarterfinal spot at ASIAD 2026 as one of the best third-placed teams. Meanwhile, Thailand exited the tournament following their failure to win.
