PM congratulates Vietnam on AFC U23 Asian Cup success
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has sent a congratulatory letter to the Vietnamese team and coaching staff following their dramatic victory over South Korea in the third-place playoff at the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026, praising their resilience, fighting spirit and contribution to national pride.
10-men Vietnam defeated South Korea 7-6 on penalties after a 2-2 draw following extra time early on January 24, securing third place at the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026.
On behalf of the Government and football fans nationwide, the Prime Minister congratulated the coaching staff and the entire Vietnam U23 squad for their determined and courageous performances throughout the tournament, particularly in the third-place match.
He noted that the achievement brought joy, encouragement and pride to the people and the country, while also contributing meaningfully to celebrating the success of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The Prime Minister described the result as a vivid demonstration of Vietnam’s willpower, confidence and aspirations, highlighting the team’s disciplined, intelligent and cohesive style of play, as well as their strong sense of responsibility when representing the national image.
He also commended the thorough, scientific and professional preparation of the coaching staff, the close guidance of the Vietnam Football Federation and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and especially the unity, dedication and quiet contributions of the players.
Referring to the team’s achievements as a continuation of earlier successes, including the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games, the Prime Minister said Vietnam’s performance at the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 conveyed a strong message about the country’s young generation in a new era—ambitious, resilient, united and ready to engage more deeply with the international arena.
The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to football fans across the country for their continued support, encouragement and companionship, which he said has provided important spiritual strength to the team throughout the tournament, including matches where results did not meet expectations.
