National team rise one place in latest FIFA rankings

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese national men’s football team have climbed one place to 96th position in the world, according to the latest rankings released by global governing body FIFA.

The move up the rankings can be attributed to the team’s impressive victory at the Hung Thinh 2022 international friendly tournament held in Ho Chi Minh City. The recent good form has helped the national team to accumulate an additional 7.81 points to total 1,226.65 points, thereby surpassing Belarus to move up to 96th place.

September 28 also marked 1,400 days since the nation first broke into the top 100 sides in the world.

The next FIFA rankings will be announced on October 6 and it is expected to have several big changes ahead of the World Cup and AFF Cup.

Vietnam have been placed in Group B with Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, and Laos at this year's AFF Cup following the draw held on August 30 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The group stage will take place in a round-robin format, with each team will playing four games, including two away matches and two home matches, to determine the top two teams which will then advance to the semi-finals.

From the semi-finals, matches will take place in a home and away format over two games. The away goals rule will subsequently be applied to determine the winner if there is a draw after the first and second legs.

Vietnam have twice won the tournament and were the only Southeast Asian team to advance to the third qualification round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
