Le Khanh Duy breaks Asian youth record to win first weightlifting gold for Vietnam
VOV.VN - Seventeen-year-old weightlifter Le Khanh Duy broke the Asian youth record in the clean and jerk (65kg) and secured Vietnam’s first gold medal at the 2025 Asian Youth Games on the evening of October 27 in Bahrain.
Competing in the 65kg class, Le Khanh Duy placed fourth in the snatch but produced a strong clean-and-jerk series. He successfully lifted 156kg in the clean and jerk, surpassing the previous Asian youth mark and clinching the event’s top prize after his closest rival from China failed on a 157kg attempt.
The competition at this edition scores medals separately for snatch and clean and jerk, giving athletes additional medal opportunities. With Le Khanh Duy’s gold, Vietnam’s delegation now has its first top podium finish after four days of competition; prior to the victory the team had collected five silver and six bronze medals.
Le Khanh Duy from Khanh Hoa province in south-central Vietnam marked a milestone for Vietnam’s youth sports at the continental level, giving the team extra momentum ahead of upcoming regional events.
