Hong Nhung wins Youth Rapid World Cup 2021

VOV.VN - Young Vietnamese player Nguyen Hong Nhung on August 31 won a gold medal at the U16 FIDE Online Cadets & Youth Rapid World Cup 2021.

Nhung claimed the gold medal after beating another Vietnamese player, Vu Bui Thi Thanh Van, after two games in the final round to record a score of 2-0.

By winning the title, the 15-year-old got a spot at the FIDE Online Rapid Super Final 2021 FIDE Online Rapid Super Final 2021, which is scheduled to run from December 18 to December 24. The competition will have a prize pool of US$30,000.

Despite losing out in the final, Van was also rewarded a spot in the Super Final.

Another Vietnamese player, Dau Khuong Duy, who competed in the U10 category, also claimed a ticket to the Super Final after beating Russia's Matfey Yurasov 2-0, winning the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Dinh Nho Kiet, who competed in the U12 category, failed to take bronze after being defeated by Ukrainian rival Samunenkov, finishing in fourth place.

In the U18 category, two Vietnamese players Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong and Pham Tran Gia Thu were both disappointingly eliminated from the tournament in the first knockout round.

The FIDE Online Youth Rapid World Cup Finals, held virtually from August 26 to August 31, consists of ten separate 16-player knockout tournaments, including Girls U10, 12, 14, 16, and 18, along with Open U10, 12, 14, 16, and 18. Each event features six players who have the personal right to participate and 10 qualifiers for 160 participants in total.
