HCM City chess player wins GM honour at Hanoi tournament
VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City chess player Pham Tran Gia Phuc claimed the championship in the Grandmaster section at the Grandmaster–International Master Chess Tournament 2026, which concluded in Hanoi on January 5.
The tournament was wrapped up with competitions in the Grandmaster and International Master sections, along with the completion of classical and blitz chess games.
In the GM section, Gia Phuc topped the standings with 6 points after nine games. Other Vietnamese players competing in this section, Tu Hoang Thong and Dinh Nho Kiet, finished fourth and tenth with 5.5 points and 2 points, respectively.
Pham Tran Gia Phuc's victory was seen as a major achievement, given that he overcame strong opponents such as Ravi Teja S of India and Quizon Daniel of the Philippines.
In the International Master section, Filipino player Garcia Jan Emmanuel secured the championship with 7 points after nine games. Vietnamese players Bao Khoa, Bui Vinh, and Pham Le Hoang Quan did not finish among the top three.
In the blitz competition, after 11 games, Garcia Jan Emmanuel continued his strong performance to take the title with 9 points. Quizon Daniel also scored 9 points but finished second on tie-breaks, while Vietnam’s Ngo Duc Tri placed third with 8.5 points.
According to the organisers, all results have been updated in the system of the FIDE, and players’ ratings will be adjusted in line with regulations, contributing to their Elo calculations.
