GM Quang Liem progresses to semi-finals of Charity Cup
VOV.VN - Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem won a place in the semi-finals of the online rapid chess tournament - the Charity Cup - after recording a solid win over David Navara of the Czech Republic on March 24.
Liem held the advantage of playing with the white pieces as the game began, allowing him to easily win the first set, before Navara quickly equalised the score in the second set.
The GM then made a spectacular comeback in the third set, helping him to secure a victory after 27 moves. The fourth set ended in a draw. The final score means Liem has progressed through to the Charity Cup’s semi-finals.
Liem is set to face Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland in the semi-final round which is due to be held on March 25.
The Charity Cup, taking place from March 19 to 26, represents the second tournament in the grand series Champion Chess Tour. Similar to the Airthings Masters, 16 players are competing in the first stage in a round-robin format, with US$750 being awarded for every win and US$250 being given for a draw.
