ASEAN Schools Games to attract 1,300 regional students, coaches

VOV.VN - The 13th ASEAN Schools Games due to take place in the central city of Da Nang from May 29 to June 9 is expected to draw the participation of 1,300 athletes and coaches from 10 Southeast Asian countries.

At the launching ceremony in Hanoi on May 22, the organisers announced "Connect to shine bright" as the main theme of the event to honour sporting talents, enhance connections among ASEAN students, and strengthen the solidarity that exists among young people in the region.

The red-shanked douc langur, which is a rare animal listed in Vietnam’s Red Book and classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as endangered, has been chosen as the mascot of the games. Its goal is to convey a message of environmental protection during the festival.

Athletes will compete across 107 events of six sports, namely swimming, athletics, badminton, basketball, pencak silat, and vovinam.

Furthermore, seminars on the development of sporting movements among students will also get underway.

First held in 2009, the ASEAN Schools Games has become the largest sporting event for high school students in the Southeast Asian region. It targets the promotion of solidarity among ASEAN countries through school sporting activities and improving the quality of physical education.
