AFC fines VFF for regulatory violation linked to friendly tournament

VOV.VN - The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has fined the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) US$1,250 for submitting their application late to organise the Thien Long international friendly tournament in July, 2025.

This decision was made following a meeting of the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee, which imposed a series of sanctions on member federations. The VFF’s delay violated the AFC International Competition Regulations, and the fine must be paid within 30 days of the decision.

The Thien Long Tournament 2025 – Thaigroup Cup (TLT-S8) took place from July 20 to 28, 2025, at Tam Ky Stadium in Da Nang City, Vietnam.

This was the 8th edition of the tournament, organised by Thien Long Sports Company in collaboration with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang City.

The tournament featured 5 teams - Ninh Binh FC, Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL), SHB Da Nang, Quang Nam FC, and a University Student Team from the Republic of Korea.

The teams competed in a single round-robin format, where each team played one match against every other team. The champion was determined based on points earned.

This tournament served as a pre-season opportunity for the clubs to assess their squads and test tactics in preparation for the 2025–2026 V.League season.

Also in its decision, the AFC also handed down fines to several other football associations in Asia.

The Football Association of Indonesia received a penalty from the AFC in the 2025 President's Cup friendly tournament with a fine of US$1,250.

Additional penalties were issued for infractions during the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers and the Asian qualifiers for the World Cup. The Football Association of Malaysia and the Mongolian Football Federation were each fined US$1,000 for starting the second half of their U23 qualifier match 1 minute and 32 seconds late.

The Football Association of Thailand, which hosted the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers, was fined US$33,000 for breaching organizational regulations during the match between Malaysia’s U23s and Lebanon’s U23s.

The most severe penalty was handed to the Uzbekistan Football Association, which was fined up to US$300,000 for significant violations in organising the 2026 World Cup qualifying match between Uzbekistan and Qatar.
