2022 AFC Women’s Cup: Vietnam to take on China in quarter-finals

VOV.VN - Vietnam will play China in the 2022 AFC Women’s Cup quarter-finals after they drew against Myanmar 2-2 in their last group match in India on January 27.

Theoretically coach Mai Duc Chung and Vietnamese players only need to draw against Myanmar to progress into the quarterfinals. The task seems to be easy for Vietnamese girls as they meet regional opponents that have never defeated them over the past 10 years.

In reality, captain Huynh Nhu and her teammates experienced a tough match as their Myanmar opponents took advantage of their physical strength to dominate the game at the beginning.

A Myanmar player opened the score from a penalty kick in the 28th minute, before Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung hammered home from a corner kick, earning an equalizer.

In the second half, Myanmar extended the lead in early minutes, bringing to bear pressure on the Vietnamese team.

Vietnamese girls looked confident to play, and captain Huynh Nhu did not miss a chance to score a goal from a penalty kick.

Neither teams scored more goals in the last minutes of the game.

Coming third in Group C, Vietnam qualified for the quarter-finals and they are scheduled to face China in the knockout stage on January 30.

A winning game would send Vietnam to FIFA World Cup 2023.
