Zalo is most popular social media platform in Vietnam
VOV.VN - Zalo has surpassed Facebook, TikTok and Youtube to become the most popular social medial platform in Vietnam, according to the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC).
A MIC report released on November 28 shows the domestically developed platform boasts 76.5 million monthly active users, surpassing major international platforms such as Facebook (72 million), TikTok (67 million), and YouTube (63 million).
The MIC data aligns with a recent survey by Decision Lab, which indicates that Zalo is the most favoured massaging application in Vietnam.
In Decision Lab’s The Connected Consumer report in Quarter III 2024, Zalo was leading the Messaging Platforms category with a penetration rate of 85%, marking a slight increase of 3% compared to the previous quarter. Meanwhile, the penetration rates of both Facebook and Messenger show a slight decline to 62% and 53%, respectively.
In addition, Zalo maintained its position as the most popular platform across all three generations - Gen X, Gen Y, and Gen Z, with an outstanding usage rate. Among respondents from Gen X, 75% favoured Zalo for daily messaging (casual messaging), while the rates for Messenger and Facebook in this group were significantly lower, at just 10% and 7%, respectively.
Zalo is an OTT application that allows users to send messages and make calls on both mobile and desktop platforms. Developed by VNG, a leading technology company in Vietnam, Zalo was first launched in 2012 as a mobile app and quickly became popular not only in Vietnam but also in countries such as the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Germany, Myanmar, and Singapore.
The app enables users to send messages and make free calls between accounts as long as they have an internet connection. Today, Zalo also offers a wide range of additional utilities, including sharing short videos; purchasing movie, train, bus, and flight tickets; paying bills; and booking taxis, among others.
According to VNG, Zalo now boasts 77.6 million monthly active users and nearly 1.97 billion messages sent daily. This impressive performance underscores Zalo’s dominance and its commitment to enhancing user experiences through continuous development.
