According to a survey of Vietnam’s population about AIDS in 2005, most young Vietnamese people know how to use at least one contraceptive but they don’t use this method to protect themselves. 80 percent of young people in Vietnam do not use condoms in their first sexual experience. This means they risk unwanted pregnancy and contracting sexually-transmitted diseases. More than ever, young girls still suffer the most consequences.
Mass media and education are considered one effective measure to highlight the risks. However, there remain sensitive issues that need to be resolved such as adolescent reproductive and sexual health (ARSH) programmes, programmes to educate young people about population, and HIV/AIDS prevention.
Over the past years, groups at the age of 10-19 and 19-24 have been targeted in strategic programmes of the National Committee for Population, Family and Children. The Ministry of Education and Training has co-ordinated with other relevant agencies to introduce an education programme on population, reproductive health and family planning into schools.
The Central Committee of the HCM Communist Youth Union has set up models on adolescent reproductive health inside and outside schools, and voluntary youth programmes for communities. Relevant ministries and agencies have paid special attention to issues relating to youth and population control with the launch of effective projects and programmes. As a result, adolescents have opportunities to receive medical care, physical education and basic knowledge. Young people have more opportunities to find employment, and participate socially.
