Young man in HCM City poisoned by the world's most potent toxin
VOV.VN - A Vietnamese 25-year-old man in Ho Chi Minh City has been hospitalised due to botulinum poisoning caused by consuming improperly stored canned pate, according to Nguyen Hoang Trong Nghia, head of the Department of Neurology at the Military Hospital 175, on March 24.

According to the doctor, the patient was hospitalized after exhibiting severe symptoms of botulinum poisoning.
His condition had worsened to the point of complete quadriplegia, drooping eyelids, dilated pupils, and dependence on a ventilator. Doctors ultimately diagnosed him with botulinum poisoning.
Following treatment, the patient gradually showed signs of recovery. He was able to open his eyes, and his limbs regained some strength. However, doctors noted that he still required ventilator support.
Botulism is a serious illness caused by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that produces a highly toxic substance commonly found in improperly preserved food, according to the Ministry of Health.
Vietnam has recorded several botulinum-related food poisoning cases in recent years. In March 2021, a 42-year-old woman died, and two others were left in critical condition in Ho Chi Minh City after consuming vegan food suspected to be contaminated with the toxin.
In 2020, at least 16 people suffered botulism after eating vegan pâté produced by a Hanoi-based food company. A 70-year-old man died, while several others remained on ventilators for months before recovering.
