Workshop looks to improve air quality for Can Tho city

A workshop was held in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on November 24 seeking to improve air quality for the city through strategic management of air quality.

The event was jointly organised by the municipal People’s Committee, the Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Clean Air Act (CAA).

Tanya Gaurano from the CAA said the through the workshop, local managerial officials could put forth proper policies and programmes in the field via updating relevant information and recognising health, social and economic impacts posed by air pollution.

In Can Tho, traffic is the main culprit of polluted air. The monitoring results in 2011-2015 showed that the quality of air in the city is contaminated due to total suspended particles (TSP) and noise
It also helps policy makers estimate the level of air pollution so to implement measures to reduce emissions from different arenas, she added.
According to the CAA, air population in Vietnam is mainly caused by factory smoke, electricity sources, and traffic activities.

It is anticipated that emissions, including SO2, will increase by over 30% and dust nearly 20% in Can Tho between 2020 and 2025.

Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Dao Anh Dung said the first action plan for the city’s air quality management was announced by the VEA and the CAA and handed over to the People’s Committee in May 2017.
