Work starts on Vietnamese-aided Vang Vieng hospital expansion

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 2 in Vang Vieng district, Vientiane province, to commence the expansion project of the local district hospital.

The project, a gift from the Party, State, and people of Vietnam to their Lao counterparts, was announced during the state visit to Laos by State President Luong Cuong in April.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Minh Tam noted that the project demonstrates Vietnam’s special attention to the healthcare development and social welfare of the Lao people. He highlighted that the expanded hospital will enhance medical capacity for local residents and neighbouring areas, improve service quality, reduce overloading at existing facilities, and provide a better working environment for doctors and medical staff, aiming towards safe and effective patient care.

Khamphane Sitthidampha, Party Secretary and Governor of Vientiane province, affirmed that the project reflects Vietnam’s support in developing infrastructure and ensuring better healthcare services for local communities. He expressed deep gratitude to the Party, State, Government and people of Vietnam for their assistance, and called on relevant Lao agencies to closely coordinate with stakeholders to ensure timely implementation.

With a total investment of US$3 million, the project is scheduled for 2025–2026. It will comprise a two-storey main building with a floor area of 3,320 sqm, housing departments for general examination, emergency, obstetrics and paediatrics, surgery, and inpatient wards with 43 beds. Supporting facilities will include a medical gas supply unit, a power generator, a wastewater treatment station, along with associated infrastructure such as 2,439 sqm of internal roads and yards, power and water systems, and advanced medical equipment.

Vang Vieng, located about 110 km from the capital city of Vientiane, is one of Laos’ top 10 must-visit tourist destinations, attracting a large number of international visitors with its vibrant tourism services geared towards young travellers.
