The promulgation of the HIV/AIDS prevention law and policies as well as the active mobilisation of resources have helped Vietnam actively prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, said Dr. Kevin De Cock, Director of the WHO's Department of HIV/AIDS.

At a working session in Hanoi on October 10 by the Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) under the Ministry of Health, he also spoke highly of the determination of the Party, Government and relevant agencies of Vietnam in implementing commitments with the United Nations to fight HIV/AIDS.

The WHO official said prevention and treatment are considered unseparated issues in the UN strategy on HIV/AIDS prevention until 2010, under which all HIV/AIDS patients will be provided with antiretroviral (ARV) treatment.

He reconfirmed the organisation's further technical assistance to the Vietnamese health sector to prevent the epidemic through community-based health care programmes.

Dr. Duong Quoc Trong, Director of the VAAC, said Vietnam will give priority to raising public awareness about the disease, providing HIV/AIDS counselling and testing, and further monitoring HIV/AIDS carriers.
