Four fishermen, including one in the southernmost Ca Mau province and three others in the neighbouring province of Kien Giang have been reported missing as prolonged heavy rains accompanied by whirlwinds have caused damage in the area over recent days. Kien Giang province has reported the sinking of nine ships since August 8.
In Ca Mau province, heavy rains have damaged 81 houses, unroofed 160 others as well as three schools, and sunk two fishing ships, causing loss estimated at VND600 million (US$37,500).
Strong winds over U Minh Ha National Park have uprooted trees in 21 ha on cajeput forests.
Heavy rains have also inundated fields of mature summer-autumn rice crop in the province.
