The World Bank (WB) will provide a preferential loan of US$70 million help develop health care services in the Mekong Delta. An agreement to this effect was signed in Hanoi on July 24 by Le Duc Thuy, Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), and Klaus Rohland, World Bank Country Director for Vietnam.

The healthcare development project has an estimated cost of US$85 million, of which US$70 million come from the WB, US$5 million in non-refundable aid from the Japanese Government and US$ 10 from the Vietnamese Government.

The project will be implemented in 13 provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta including Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Can Tho, Soc Trang, Dong Thap, An Giaing, Kien Giang,  Bac Lieu and Ca Mau, and at the Can Tho Polyclinic and the Can Tho Medical-Pharmaceutical University.

It aims to improve the quality and capacity of hospital services, raise the efficiency of the preventive medical system, develop human resources, and particularly, assist treatment of underprivileged people.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the SBV Governor expressed his hope that the project will help Vietnam gradually improve the medical system and the quality of medical services in the Mekong Delta.
