The World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced their Global Monitoring Report 2007, praising Vietnam’s achievements in childcare.

According to the report entitled “Confronting the Challenges of Gender Equality and Fragile States”, the rate of under-weight among under-five children was reduced to 28 percent in 2003 from 45 percent in 1990 and the under-five infant mortality rate was lowered to 19 per thousand in 2005 from 53 per thousand in 1990.

The rate of birth-giving cases receiving assistance of skilled midwives rose to over 90 percent in 2005 from 77 percent in 1997.

In the world, the report said due to strong growth performance and better policies, an additional 34 million children in poor countries gained access to primary school since 2000; over 550 million children were vaccinated against measles, and the number of HIV positive people with access to antiretroviral treatment rose nearly sevenfold from 2001.

The report also recommended developing countries to pay more attention to gender equality, while donors and international financial organisations should play an active role in monitoring gender equality, creating more opportunities and rights for women.
