Vietnam’s VINASAT satellite system will be launched into the 132 degree east orbital slot, 36,000 km from the Earth, in April 2008. The event is expected to give impetus to the Vietnam telecommunications sector during its integration into the region and the world.

Representatives of the VNPT Group and the Ministry of Post and Telematics recently had a meeting with their counterparts from US company Lockheed Martin to supervise and speed up the production of the VINASAT satellite and other works of the VINASAT programme.

The two sides signed an agreement on Lockheed Martin’s commitment to improving the quality of the project.

Lockheed Martin previously won a US$160-million contract to provide satellite, delivery-in-orbit service and satellite control equipment for Vietnam’s national VINASAT programme, which is worth US$270 million.

Once fully operational, the satellite project will help develop the country’s telecommunications services and save millions of US$ in the current spending on hiring foreign satellites.
