More skeletons tumbled out of the Vietnam Food Joint Stock Company (Vinafood)’s closet as food safety and hygiene inspectors in southern Binh Duong province raided one of its outlets on Monday and found imported meats and other foods being sold without expiry dates.

At the HCM City-based company’s Swire outlet in Song Than Industrial Park, inspectors found 378 tonnes of chickens and sausages.

The raid follows a major haul in HCM City last week when the Division of Animal Health caught the company selling meats and other foods after their sell-by dates, changing labels on expired meats, and committing other offences.

An inspection of its cold storage in District 7 last week netted more than 11 tonnes of frozen pork and 10 tonnes of sausages imported from Canada that had expired in March and May.

At the company’s Tan Tao store in Binh Chanh District, more than 17 tonnes of food imported from Germany had new expiry dates stuck on top of old ones.

All of them had April manufacturing dates but different expiry dates.

At its Hoang Phi Quan store in Thu Duc District, inspectors discovered 200 tonnes of foodstuffs, including pork and chicken imported from the US, without production or expiry dates.

Vinafood had also violated quarantines regulations by failing to report 50 tonnes of imported food, animal health officials said.

Nguyen Thi Thu Nga, the department’s chief inspector, said Vinafood has been asked to furnish original documents for all the imports.

On July 20, the Binh Duong Division of Animal Health also found four tonnes of frozen pork at a store belonging to Dai Tan Viet Company without expiry dates and sealed the outlet pending further action.
