The Vietnam Ministry of Post and Telematics has reviewed the 10-year development of the Internet in Vietnam and worked out a strategy for its future development.

Vietnam currently has 15.5 million Internet users, accounting for 18.6 percent of its population, which is higher than the world’s average level (16.9 percent). The country has three international portals connected to 10 nations with total bandwidth of 7.2 GB.

However, Internet exploitation in Vietnam remains inefficient due to poor transmission and appliance, and problems arising from low security, malicious information, and trade cybercrime.

The Ministry of Post and Telematics will focus on developing landline and wireless broadband technology from now until 2010. It aims to raise the rate of Internet users to 25-30 percent with one quarter of them accessing wideband services.
