The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) has estimated that as much as 95 percent of handicapped children will be able to go to school by 2015.

Submitting a plan of action for the 2006-2015 period to the Prime Minister for approval, MoET proposed needing an amount of VND450 billion (US$28,12 million) for research and production of school aids and VND1.5 billion (US$93,750) for a system of information of education for disabled children by 2010. Meanwhile, free-of-charge school materials, equipment and assistance facilities will be supplied to disabled children.


Vietnam
will also develop special schools for disabled children with centres for education and integration being set up in all provinces nationwide.


In addition, more than VND600 billion (US$37.5 million) will be reserved for training teachers for disabled children, targeting to a proportion of one regular teacher for every 300 disabled children.


Statistics show the number of disabled children going to school has increased from 42,000 in 1996 to 270,000 at present, a 6.4 fold increase. Disabled children are now taught not only at kindergartens and primary schools but also at vocational training centres, colleges and universities.


The country now has more than 2,500 schools and 105 special education establishments for disabled children.
