Vietnamese scientist granted Korean citizenship under MCOT initiative

Vietnamese Professor Nguyen Xuan Mung, who is currently working at Sejong University, has been granted Korean citizenship under the Ministry of Justice’s Multiple Citizenship for Outstanding Talent (MCOT) initiative.

The initiative allows dual citizenship and aims to attract top experts in the fields of science, arts, sports, and research.

Prof. Mung, who serves in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Sejong University, has spent more than a decade researching and teaching in the RoK.

Reflecting on his naturalisation, Prof. Mung described it not merely as a legal procedure but as a moment affirming that the RoK is his second home, recognising the efforts and challenges he has overcome. He also emphasised that becoming a Korean citizen strengthens his sense of responsibility to contribute further to the East Asian country’s scientific development.

The MCOT initiative is regarded as a key tool for the RoK to provide long-term residency for world-class scholars, promoting contributions to innovation and strategic development.

Sejong University highlighted that the cultural and academic diversity of its international lecturers brings new vitality to its research environment. By leveraging the MCOT initiative, the university aims to provide a stable foundation for leading scholars to dedicate themselves confidently and long-term to the Korean society and academia.
