Vietnamese General Association meets in Belgium

(VOV) - The Vietnamese General Association on January 5 held a get-together in Belgium to welcome the New Year 2014 and the upcoming Lunar New Year festival (Tet).

Association Chairman Huynh Cong My briefed participants on the future activities, which include an art performance on February 2 to celebrate Tet and a charity bazaar to raise funds for needy people in the homeland.

My announced a contest in which participants will have an opportunity to win a round trip Brussels-Hanoi airline ticket.

Vietnamese ambassador to Brussels and Luxembourg Pham Sanh Chau recapped the Vietnamese Party and State’s policies towards overseas Vietnamese (OVs), helping them gain Vietnamese citizenship and passports and programs to assist them purchase a home in Vietnam.

The ambassador said that the Vietnamese State also has programs to encourage qualified OVs to teach the Vietnamese language to children, citing the fact that at present, there is only one Vietnamese language class in Brussels.

The Vietnamese embassy in Belgium will co-ordinate with the association to open more such classes in the future.

The ambassador also unveiled a program for OVs who want to return to the homeland during Tet and attend a cordial dinner with the State President, visit Hung Temple and the Huong Pagoda.

He added, most especially, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese is offering an opportunity for OVs to visit Truong Sa archipelago and a program for some young people to attend a camping festival in Vietnam.

Around 13,000 Vietnamese nationals are currently living and working in Belgium.
