Vietnamese and Chinese children raised their voices against trafficking in woman and children across the border and made recommendations for preventing the trafficking through exchanges and dialogues with government leaders at a forum in Hanoi on August 28.

The forum, which was co-organised by the Vietnam Women’s Union, the China Women’s Confederation and UNICEF, attracted 120 children from the Vietnamese cities and provinces of Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Hung Yen, and Bac Giang, and the Chinese provinces of Guangxi and Yunnan.

They shared experiences and knowledge and discussed measures to prevent human trafficking. They also made proposals to better protect, care for and assist child victims of social evils.

Addressing the forum, Nguyen Thi Oanh, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Women’s Union, said it is imperative to create favourable conditions for children to engage in activities against human trafficking by encouraging them to detect and denounce the crime, and together with their parents and friends, to help the victims reintegrate into the community and build a safe and healthy living environment for them.

Meanwhile, UNICEF chief representative Jesper Morch encouraged the participation of children in building programmes of action to combat the trafficking in women and children and assist victims. He said UNICEF Vietnam and UNCEF China will continue to help relevant ministries and agencies to curb human trafficking across the border.

In messages drafted at the forum, Vietnamese and Chinese children called on leaders of the two countries to create opportunities for victims to attend school, get jobs and live in the peaceful environment. They also expressed their desires to actively participate in cooperative programmes on combating human trafficking.
