The Director of Central Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute, Dr. Nguyen Tran Hien said on July 14 that therapeutic treatments for A/H1N1 infected patients are paying off, with most recovering quickly and no fatalities reported so far.

According to the Ministry of Health, as of July 13, 247 A/H1N1 patients out of a total of 299 confirmed cases have been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment.

Infected people have been treated following medical instructions issued by the Ministry of Health, which they have thoroughly and effectively enforced, said Dr. Hien, on the sidelines of a workshop to exchange experiences on how to treat the disease held in Hanoi.

The patients cured took “Oseltamivir” tablets in accordance with the Ministry’s therapeutic guidelines. They all received clean bills of health after only 7-10 days, said Clinician Dr. Tran Tich Hien.

Although there have been no human-to-human transmissions reported so far, participants at the workshop warned that the number of infections is likely to increase in the winter.

In response to this, Vice Health Minister Dr. Nguyen Thi Xuyen called on those taking part to hold more discussions on finalising the Ministry’s therapeutic methods, as well as exchanging their experiences on A/H1N1 treatments in Vietnam and abroad, along with the use of anti-viral medication in the prevention of the A/H1N1 and A/H5N1 influenzas.

Vietnam has reported 10 more cases of A/H1N1, bringing the total number of infections in the Southeast Asian Nation to 309 as of 5 pm on July 14.
