Vietnam wishes for stronger international cooperation in crime prevention and combat

VOV.VN - Vietnam aspires to work closely with international friends to improve the efficiency of transnational crime prevention and combat, Lieut. Gen. Tran Van Ve, Head of the Office of the Criminal Investigation Agency said at the 39th ASEAN Chiefs of Police Conference (ASEANAPOL) which officially opened in Hanoi on September 18.

The conference focused on ASEANAPOL’s continued cooperation to fight emerging crimes like illegal purchase and sale of drugs, terrorism, arms and human trafficking, and technology crimes.

In his opening address, Vietnamese Minister of Public Security To Lam said that as the Southeast Asian region is facing security challenges, the role of ASEAN law enforcement agencies is very important.

Currently, ASEAN is considered a dynamic region and plays a very important role in economic development strategies, security and national defence of many countries in the world. Located in highly important strategic geographic position, the regional bloc is drawing the attention and investment resources from other nations and international organizations across the globe which will see prospects for sustainable development in the future, he said.

 “I call on the police forces of countries to bolster cooperation in sharing information on transnational crimes, arresting most wanted criminals, and combating transnational crimes. The police force of ASEANAPOL member countries and their partners need to reach a common voice and offer mutual support at international forums to show solidarity and unity in line with the ASEAN cooperative spirit,” Lam said.

Lieut. Gen. Tran Van Ve also reviewed the nearly 60 year- history of establishment and development with glorious feats of arm, making significant contributions to ensuring national security and social order and safety, and maintaining peace and people's happiness.

In the framework of ASEANAPOL cooperation as well as bilateral cooperation with other regional countries, the Vietnamese police force has always been an active and responsible member in sharing criminal information and coordinating investigations in chasing and arresting criminals and in effectively carrying out plans and campaigns against crimes which has earned international plaudits, Ve said.

Regarding the major goal of the ASEANAPOL 39, Ve said the meeting aims to augment multinational cooperation in the prevention and fight against 10 types of emerging crimes in the region such as illegal purchase and sale of narcotics, terrorism, weapon smuggling, human trafficking, credit card fraud, high-tech crime, illegal wildlife trade and maritime crime.”

Themed “Honored by Partnership, Sustained by Unification”, the three-day conference running until September 20, is drawing 300 delegates from ASEAN member states and ASEANAPOL’s 10 dialogue partners.
