The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked on the sidelines of the 108th Session of the International Labour Conference recently held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Signatories to the MoU were Dao Ngoc Dung, Vietnam’s Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, and Nasser bin Thani Al Hamli, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation of United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The MoU stipulates recruitment and training process, responsibilities of the dispatch and recruitment agencies, in addition to the contents of the labour contracts and the process of signing the contracts with guest workers.

The MoU came into immediate effect and is to be valid for four years with the option of automatic renewal.

Vietnam has been sending guestwokers to work in the UAE since 1995 with the number of migrant workers peaking at more than 10,000.

Currently there are some 5,000 Vietnamese labourers working in the UAE, mostly in the fields of construction, mechanics, shipbuilding, and hotel services with a basic monthly salary of US$450 per month.

The signing of the MoU in the field of housemaid recruitment will see overall co-operation increase between the two countries following a MoU signed between the two governments on human resources in 2009.

It will also create favourable conditions for Vietnamese candidates to work as housemaids in the UAE in the future.
