Earth Hour is a campaign initiated by the WWF to respond to the global climate change. It was first implemented in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 and soon became an international event. In 2009, more than 1 billion people in 4,000 cities in 88 nations participated in the event.
Tran Minh Hien, Director of the WWF in Vietnam said, Vietnam is among the countries expected to be most heavily affected by climate change. Therefore, the nation should have a strong commitment to reducing the greenhouse effect to achieve the goal of reducing the mean global temperature by 2 degrees Celsius in this century.
This year’s Earth Hour will be promoted by public events in 20 cities in Vietnam. The major event in Ho Chi Minh City will feature a number of popular singers and ambassadors involved in the campaign.
Speaking at the press conference, Nguyen Manh Hung, Deputy General Director of EVN, promised that EVN will disseminate energy-saving tips to pupils across the country. EVN also pledged to develop its business sustainably to conserve national resources and protect the environment.
