Vietnam to launch KOL alliance to foster trust, combat fake news online

VOV.VN - A dedicated alliance of Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) is set to make its debut in Vietnam this August during the country’s first-ever National KOL Conference, according to the National Cybersecurity Association (NCA).

The initiative aims to promote the positive role of social media influencers, including Key Opinion Leaders and Key Opinion Consumers, while mitigating risks related to the spread of misinformation, harmful content, or low-quality product promotions, NCA said at a workshop held on July 28.

Presentations show KOLs and KOCs have increasingly become key opinion leaders in the digital age, shaping public perception and inspiring millions, especially youth. No longer limited to product endorsement, KOLs now guide public taste, lifestyle choices, consumer behaviour, and even social issues such as environmental protection, gender equality, and education.

However, some KOLs have in recent years misused their platforms to spread false information, cook up harmful content, or advertise substandard products. In the digital environment, a single unchecked statement or misleading post can have far-reaching negative consequences on society.

At the workshop, Nguyen Tien Cuong, representative of the Department of Cybersecurity and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05) under the Ministry of Public Security, revealed that the department and the NCA have developed three key initiatives, including the formation of a strong and reputable KOL alliance.

This alliance will bring together positive, socially responsible influencers, raise public awareness, fight misinformation and online scams, spread digital safety skills, and lead community-driven projects.

Operating on a voluntary and consensus-based model, the alliance seeks to build public trust, encourage responsible influence, and call out inappropriate behaviour in the influencer community.

Its primary goal is to build trust, promote positive values, and publicly counter inappropriate influencer behaviours on digital platforms. The alliance will operate on a voluntary and consensus-based model with diverse participation.

The upcoming National KOL Conference is expected to serve as an open roundtable for influencers, government agencies, tech platforms, and communities, to contribute to the development of a safe, civilized, and sustainable digital ecosystem in Vietnam.

Alongside the alliance, a Code of Conduct and Community Standards for influencers will be introduced to promote voluntary transparency, self-regulation, and ethical influence in the digital space.
