Vietnam does not forbid its citizen to voluntarily get married to foreigners. The concern is how to prevent illegal marriages through match-makers.

Ha Thi Khiet, President of the Vietnam Women’s Union, made the affirmation during her recent meeting with marriage bureaus in the Republic of Korea. She had led a delegation of the Vietnam Women’s Union on a visit to the RoK which ended on April 26.

The visit was part of the two countries’ joint programme to exchange visits and share experience in family life related to gender equality and marriage to foreigners.

During their stay in the RoK, Ms Khiet and her delegation worked with RoK authorizes and met with some Vietnamese women who were married to Korean husbands.

Ms Khiet said Vietnam does not forbid its citizen to voluntarily get married to foreigners. In fact, as more and more Vietnamese women are marrying foreigners, the bottom line is how to prevent illegal marriages through match-makers to protect the dignity, interest and image of Vietnamese women, mostly rural women, after they are married to foreigners.

Ms Khiet also noted that many Vietnamese women are living happily in the RoK, helping to build a good image of Vietnamese women. The two countries’ authorized agencies and social organisations should cooperate to ensure Vietnam-RoK marriages are happy ones.
