The Vietnam Red Cross (VNRC) has mobilised financial assistance to help millions of people in need and millions of families escape hunger and poverty over the past 60 years, said the society's chairman.

Chairman Nguyen Van Thuong, who is also VNRC’s general secretary, was speaking on the occasion of the society's 60th founding anniversary (November 23, 1946 - November 23, 2006).

Prof. Thuong told a VNA correspondent that the society has constantly developed its guidelines with a view to achieving a wide range of major goals from helping war victims to caring for disaster victims and disabled people.

VNRC in 2006 alone helped build 1,500 houses for beneficiaries of social welfare, provided 2,200 wheelchairs and 1,200 scholarships for poor children, and mobilised VND250 billion from external and local sources to assist people in need.

A number of foreign funded projects have been carried out through the society, including the "School milk" programme by the US Red Cross Society, the "Mangrove Forestation " programme by the Japanese Red Cross Society and the "HIV/AIDS Prevention" programme by the Global Fund.
