Vietnam reaffirms strong ties with WHO, receives trachoma elimination certificate

VOV.VN - At the high-level session of the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) on May 20, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan delivered a speech focusing on the close relationship between Vietnam and the World Health Organization (WHO).

He began his remarks by highlighting Vietnam’s recent celebrations of the 50th anniversary of national reunification and preparations to mark 50 years of close and effective cooperation with the WHO.

Deputy Minister Thuan affirmed that Vietnam has achieved several notable health milestones with WHO’s continuous support. First, last year, the country banned e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, a move aimed at protecting young people and reducing long-term healthcare and economic costs.

Second, social health insurance in Vietnam now covers nearly 95% of the population, including low-income households and those in the informal sector. Healthcare is now more accessible and equitable than ever.

Third, as one of the countries most prone to natural disasters, Vietnam is working to improve the climate resilience of its healthcare facilities. Just last year, Typhoon Yagi damaged hundreds of healthcare centers, underscoring the urgent need for adaptation measures to protect public health and save lives.

Deputy Minister Thuan noted that this year’s WHA theme underlines the importance of continued cooperation and solidarity in these challenging times. He expressed appreciation for WHO’s support and reaffirmed Vietnam’s wish to maintain this trusted cooperation and continue working hand in hand with other member states and partners.

On the sidelines of the ongoing WHA in Geneva, Switzerland, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus presented Vietnam with a certificate recognizing the elimination of trachoma. The recognition follows decades of coordinated action across the health sector to improve community health and prevent blindness caused by this preventable disease.

Director-General Ghebreyesus praised Vietnam’s achievement, calling it a testament to the commitment of the government, health workers, and communities across the country. He stressed that this is a strong example of how targeted interventions, close partnerships, and persistent efforts can make a real difference to people’s health.
