APEC-2006 has turned the spotlight on Vietnam’s initiatives and proposals to develop more effective cooperation among the largest economic forum in the Asian-Pacific region.

The Hanoi action plan has been lauded by member economies due to its primary importance to the progress of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, especially the Busan roadmap.

It is also the first time that Vietnam has mapped out a detailed plan on APEC reforms, of which three ideas are strongly supported by member economies as they help improve human resources and strengthen the cooperation of the Secretariat as well as coordination for senior official meetings.

Worthy of note are the initiative for public-private dialogues on anti-corruption and transparency issues, the Hoi An statement on APEC tourism cooperation, the APEC action plan for bird-flu epidemic and pandemic control, a mid-term Hanoi programme on finance and the financial market, and a programme to cut trade transaction fees by five percent for the 2007-10 period.

In addition, Vietnam has proposed boosting ties among youths, women, businesses and APEC researchers.
