The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has praised Vietnam for its efforts to finalise its policy and legal system related to women, according to Ha Thi Khiet, Chairwoman of the Vietnam National Committee for the Advancement of Women.

Mrs Khiet made the statement during a press briefing in Hanoi on January 26 where she talked about the results of protecting Vietnam's fifth and sixth national reports on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination at the United Nations headquarters recently.

The reports highlighted Vietnamese women’s achievements during the past 20 years of implementing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, particularly in gender equality and women’s increased role and position in society. They looked at the drafting of legal documents, measures to eliminate discrimination against women, and promotion of gender equality, and affirmed Vietnam’s determination to realise the convention for the advancement of women.

Mrs Khiet said the Vietnamese delegation's direct dialogue with CEDAW has reflected Vietnam's dedicated implementation of the convention as well as challenges to the country in ensuring gender equality.

She said CEDAW experts showed their keen interest in seeking special temporary solutions to eradicate prejudice about gender in family and society; ethnic minority women; gender equality in education, labour and employment as well as solutions to women trafficking and ill-treatment, prostitution and other pressing issues.
