China, Laos and Vietnam have variable sources of medicinal plants, said specialists at a conference that focused on developing the nation’s medicinal plants and medicines, held by the Ministry of Health on May 30.

However, many of these plants in Vietnam are facing extinction, mainly due to uncontrolled exploitation. The stocks of many medicinal plants in the mountain areas of Lao Cai,, Binh Dinh and Gia Lai provinces have become scarce.

In the past, Vietnam could export tonnes of medicinal materials overseas but nowadays it has to import 80 percent of the country’s total medicinal materials needed for domestic processing and consumption.
